Mission & Values
The MAA’s public service mission is based on these values:
- Alternative dispute resolution is preferable to courtroom litigation as a means to achieve fairness, economy and predictability of results for maritime disputes.
- Maritime dispute resolution proceedings should be administered efficiently and effectively, using clear rules of procedure and applying known legal principles.
- Only experienced maritime lawyers should serve as arbitrators and mediators for maritime disputes. They should be carefully selected and peer-reviewed to ensure they maintain the highest standards of impartiality, ethics and professional conduct. They should base their decisions on maritime law.
- Maritime disputes should be resolved locally in the interests of the parties and witnesses, not in distant cities or foreign countries.
